More CTMP at Ortviken
“The biggest challenge, apart from the fact that we had a global pandemic to deal with during the project, affecting not only us but also our contractors and naturally logistics, was to tear down large parts of the closed paper mill at Ortviken and build a new CTMP facility at the same time”, says Anders Granström, Mill Manager at the new facility. However, “everything is proceeding according to plan, and we are now working on qualifying existing products at Ortviken, meaning that Östrand will shut down late spring”.

Beautiful restorations of watercourses on SCA land
SCA is participating in several water projects in northern Sweden aimed at restoring watercourses and wetlands that run through SCA’s forest holdings. It is an important part of our nature conservation work to help preserve and develop habitats and benefit various species. This summer, the restoration of Per-Olamyren in the Graninge area was completed, and earlier this year, Björkån, a valuable watercourse near Sollefteå, was fully restored.
Container cargo situation more stable
After a turbulent summer, the container cargo market has stabilised somewhat. “We have finalised procurements for the fourth quarter and can see a turn in the market,” says Andreas Hamm, who is responsible for SCA’s procurement of maritime transportation.
Increased external costs in the transport sector
External costs in the transport sector have increased in recent years and are continuing to do so. The amount of emissions that must be covered by rights has increased, as have track access charges, while a new quota obligation has been introduced, all of which are contributing factors.
Large areas perfect for wind turbine components
The parts that go to make up a wind turbine are enormous, both in size and weight, creating additional logistical demands. Beginning in December, SCA Logistics will be handling 15 wind turbines at the Sundsvall terminal.
Space is growing behind SCA´s new container port
SCA´s new container port in Sundsvall is now operational. While the area is more than adequate, even more investment is planned to further increase the available space behind the quay.
Almost a century of pulp innovation, bodes well for the future
For nearly a century, we have harnessed the power from forests in the northen Sweden to produce premium pulp. In fact, the industrial activity at Ortviken began as early as the middle of the 19th century, and in 1868 a sawmill was established at Östrand. In 1909, a sulphite mill was erected at Ortviken, and in 1929 financier Ivar Kreuger decided to build a kraft mill at Östrand immediately after forming SCA (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget). In 1932, pulp production began. Four years later, the kraft pulp mill was expanded, increasing capacity to 140,000 tons per year, making it Europe’s largest.

SCA creates 100 million new climate-beneficial trees every year
SCA delivers some 100 million tree seedlings every year – seedlings that drive SCA’s climate benefit of approximately 13 million tonnes a year. First, they sequester carbon dioxide while they grow and ultimately they contribute sustainable wood raw materials for a wide variety of products. “Trees are efficient carbon dioxide sinks and generate climate benefits over many years,” says Thomas Vestman, Nursery Director.
Where climate-benefit-rich forests of the future are created
With a combination of well-managed forests and high-quality cultivated seedlings, the size of Sweden’s forests increase every year. Nurseries have long been a key part of the development of the forestry industry and are becoming increasingly important in the face of climate change. Laboratory engineer Jeanette Hammarström, from SCA NorrPlant, talks to us about SCA’s cultivation activities.
Overgrazing undermines climate benefits and the rural economy
Reducing grazing damage to newly planted forests can be of considerable benefit to the climate and the Swedish economy. Currently, overgrazing by ungulates, such as elk, reduces carbon dioxide absorption corresponding to almost a quarter of Sweden’s total emissions and reduces the added value of the country’s forests by SEK 11.9 billion. “Obviously animals eat plants, and you have to accept that to some extent, but the impacts are exceptionally high in Sweden at the moment,” says Jonas Mårtensson, President, SCA Forest.

SCA introduces Revenue Sharing for Residents Near Wind Farms
SCA has decided to take the lead ahead of the government report "The Value of Wind" (SOU 2023:18) by implementing its own compensation model, inspired by the report's proposals, for residents living near new wind farms developed by the company. The amount of compensation will be based on the distance to the turbine and the revenue generated by the turbine. "The proposal from the report is well-balanced, and that’s why we want to take the lead in this area. However, our view is that increased electricity production and resolution of the conflicts of interest that follow require state ownership of a well-designed regulatory framework. It needs to address how companies share revenue with nearby residents, how the state shares existing taxes with municipalities, and how processes to upgrade existing parks can be managed significantly faster," says Martin Ingels, Head of Wind Power at SCA.

We are the first on the market with packaging with such a high percentage of recycled plastic,” says Jerry Larsson, President of SCA Wood.

Inauguration of new logistics park and container port in Sundsvall
Sundsvall’s new Logistics park and SCA's new container port have been officially inaugurated. Most or least protected forest?
EU Member States report on measures to protect forests and nature in various ways. Sweden stands out with its very strict view of what constitutes protection. “As a result of this, Sweden appears to be the worst in Europe; however, were we to report in the same way as many other countries, we would be viewed as a pioneer. The same problem applies to how we report the status of different habitats, something that can have major consequences for how we can cultivate Swedish forests in future,” says Linda Eriksson, Forest Director at the Swedish Forest Industries Federation.

How SCA will contribute to increased climate benefits

Magasinet - the first office building in Linköping constructed of wood, was built with a 54 percent reduction in climate impact compared to if the building had been built with concrete. The climate benefit of building with wood instead of fossil-heavy materials is significant, making it an excellent choice even for larger buildings to be constructed with greater amounts of wood.
Active approach for richer biodiversity
Sweden’s forests must be developed to increase growth rates and biodiversity, something that SCA has worked on systematically for many years and is now a stated pledge in the forest industry’s collaborative efforts. The commitment has great value, and Ola Kårén, Chief Forester at SCA, argues that a common approach and shared goals strengthen and increase the value of sustainable forestry.
