Pure pulp for a pure world

  • News

As Europe’s largest private forest owner, SCA is one of the biggest and most influential companies in the forest industry. This sector forms a crucial part of the backbone of Sweden’s economy and climate policy. Contributing an impressive 93 million tons of CO₂e in climate benefits each year.

This is made possible because products like paper, cardboard, and wood store carbon throughout their entire lifespan. At the same time, these products can replace the use of fossil-based materials, such as cement in buildings or plastic in packaging. SCA Pulp plays a significant role in making our world more fossil-free—from pulp used in recyclable products to substantial amounts of green energy.

SCA Pulp in everyday life. Worldwide

We produce pulp from parts of the tree that cannot be used as timber, such as tree crowns or smaller trees. These trees are sourced from environmentally certified forests. Our pulp is used in a wide range of recyclable products that are part of everyday life—primarily household paper, toilet paper, and various types of packaging. It is also found in printing paper for books and newspapers, as well as in specialty papers like filters. Additionally, it is used in other porous products, such as insulation. In many cases, our pulp increasingly replaces fossil-based plastics, for example, in take-away cups or molded trays for fast food. Replacing fossil-based plastics is really a rapidly expanding field.

Pulp production generates large amounts of green energy

What many may not realize is that pulp production also generates a wide range of green products, contributing to a fossil-free society. During the pulp manufacturing process, large amounts of green energy are captured. Beyond using this energy for our own production, we sell approximately 600 GWh of green electricity to the Swedish power grid annually—equivalent to the output of a large hydroelectric plant. Additionally, we supply 380 GWh of district heating to Timrå and Sundsvall, enough to heat over 20,000 households.

SCA Pulp is also one of the world's largest producers of tall oil—a byproduct of pulp production. Tall oil is a renewable raw material primarily used in the production of biodiesel, as well as other types of biofuels.

Another green product is turpentine. The essential oils in turpentine occur naturally in wood and consist of various chemical compounds. Turpentine is used in the production of perfumes and cosmetic products. Essential oils are also utilized as flavoring agents in foods such as liqueurs, soft drinks, baked goods, and candy.

Thinks to the new CNCG Incinerator  at Östrand´s NBSK production, we can now produce our own sodium bisulfite—a green chemical used in our CTMP production at Ortviken.
