SCA has been nominated for the German National Sustainability Award, Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis, which is presented in collaboration with the German federal government and several prominent organizations. The award ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 23, 2023, in Düsseldorf.
“It's gratifying that our systematic climate and sustainability efforts are being recognized and proposed for such a prestigious honor. We are, of course, proud of this recognition. We have put a lot of effort into developing sustainability throughout the entire value chain,” says Hans Djurberg, Head of Sustainability, SCA.
SCA has been nominated for the German Sustainability in two different categories: raw materials and agriculture and forestry. This year, the award will be presented in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), to particularly outstanding companies in their respective sectors.
The evaluation is based on officially published sustainability data and expertise from the organizing organization's jury.
“We have come a long way when it comes to sustainable forestry and certified products. This includes active work to enhance biodiversity, secure functional ecosystems, low pollution, good conditions for staff, and a value chain that is strongly climate-positive,” says Hans Djurberg.
Regarding climate benefit, in 2022, SCA contributed with a positive balance of 10.1 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents. This can be compared to domestic aviation, which, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's preliminary figures for 2022, emitted 306,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents.
“This clearly demonstrates that an efficient and well-developed bioeconomy, will create significant climate benefits and contribute to the global fight against climate change. We are convinced that the forest industry, in particular, will play a very important role in creating conditions for a growing economy even in a fossil-free future,” says Hans Djurberg.
